Figure 8 racing comes to New Castle!
I've watched various motorsports events at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds such as truck & tractor pulling, demolition derbies, and ATV races; however, this year during the fair figure 8 races were added on Wednesday night.
Admission to the fair was $7 and the grandstands were an additional $2. I actually expected a larger turnout with many racing people in the area and normally at the fair anways. There were probably 500 or so people on hand although numerous trackchasers were on hand for this inaugural event. The car count was very good for the first time with nearly 30 cars. Most of the competitors were from Butler as the farm show has annual held figure 8 races.
The show started shortly after 7:30 PM. Two yuke tires were places in the middle of the frontstretch. Four 8-lap heat races were contested with 8, 7, 7, and 6 cars respectively starting each race. The winner of each heat recieved $50, a trophy, and advanced on to the feature. The remaining cars, which was somewhere around 25 were then to run 4 last chance races with the winner advancing to the feature and also to receive $50 and a trophy. Only 15 cars made the call so just 2 last-chance races were run with the top 2 finishing advancing.
The feature awarded the winner $500 and a trophy, which was won by the #36 car with the last name of Rombold from Prospect, Pa. The event was completed in one hour and a half and I left before the $300 to-win demo for the remaining cars plus a combine demo, which i have seen before at this fair.
Lawrence County Fairgrounds made for my 47th Pennsylvania track.
